Ford announced it's tri-fuel Super Chief in January and it is getting a great deal of attention. Not only because of it's bold look and V10 engine, but because of the potential to run on hydrogen as one of it's three fuel types (The other two being E85 and gasonline.) The change can be made from either of the three fuels from the swith inside the cab. I think it looks great and can't wait to see if it will make it to production. Cross your fingers!

P.S. I LOVE the interior!

2007 Chevy Avalanche LT Exhaust and Cosmetic Upgrades (by Bryan Ellis)

2007 Chevy Avalanche LT Exhaust and Cosmetic Upgrades

The Chevy Avalanche was launched in 2001 and initially featured light gray plastic body “cladding” that was supposed to give them a different look from both the Suburban and the Yukon. When the 2003 models were released they featured much darker plastic cladding, but the current GM president requested the trim style be removed. After that the Avalanche could be ordered without cladding. The un-cladded model, known as the WBH (For “Without Body Hardware’), and alternatively called "slicksides" by GM marketers and resembled the '03-'05 Silverado in the front.

The Chevy Avalanche was nominated for the North American Truck of the Year award and was Motor Trend magazine's SUV of the Year for 2002.

The earlier version of the Avalanche was introduced at the Chicago Auto Show in February 2006 and it maintained the styled front end much like its sister vehicles, (Tahoe/Yukon and Suburban,) yet it still has the distinct midgate and integrated bed as found on the previous incarnation. It has all the same standard and available features as the Suburban and the Tahoe.

A 2007 Avalanche was given away to the Most Valuable Player of the 2006 Major League Baseball All-Star Game, Michael Young and we worked on a similar second generation model with a 5.3 L Vortec 5300 V8 with Active Fuel Management, 320 hp. We did and upgrade the exhaust as well as a few other cosmetic upgrades. Here are some of the pics. Enjoy.

The next modification to be done to the tC is an exhaust system. This will add a bit of performance and some styling to the stock rear end. After discussing the many exhaust options with the guys from www.motorweb.com the decision was made to go with a new Greddy Ti-C Exhaust System (10117903). The Ti-C exhaust systems feature round mufflers, titanium tips with Greddy laser etched in the side, and optimal piping diameters to benefit the exhaust flow.

The guys at Motorweb (http://www.motorweb.com) got the part to us as quick as could be expected for this new and highly demanded part. We opened the box and were thrilled with the finish of the new exhaust. Greddy really packaged the system well to ensure the piping or titanium tip could not be damaged. Before installing the exhaust we removed the silencer (because what’s the point of an exhaust if you can’t hear it??) which was held in by 3 allen bolts. The tip is also held on by those same allen bolts, so if you plan to remove the silencer on this exhaust be ready for the tip to come off as well. We re-attached the tip after removing the silencer and thoroughly cleaned the muffler to prevent any oils from burning into the metal when it gets hot.

The stock exhaust is held in by 2 bolts and 3 exhaust hangers. Since the car was basically brand new still the exhaust bolts came out with ease and even the hangers weren’t all that bad to get undone. The stock exhaust was MUCH heavier and uglier than the new Greddy Exhaust as you can see below. Scion clearly wasn’t looking to squeeze any extra power out of the stock muffler as it is not designed for optimum flow like the Greddy.

The new Greddy system was quickly installed and after checking for exhaust leaks we hit the road to test it out. The new exhaust produced a relatively low deep tone at startup and idle. When you open it up the exhaust still sounds smooth, not raspy at all. The engine does seem to breathe better in high RPM driving and the car doesn’t seem to fall on its face after 65 like it did with the stock exhaust. All in all the exhaust took about an hour to install including removal of the factory exhaust. It was definitely the easiest exhaust I’ve ever installed and I highly recommend it! Thanks www.motorweb.com !

The products arrived quickly from http://www.motorweb.com and were found to be of excellent quality. The grills were very strong and sturdy and the black finish was immaculate. They were formed to fit the front end of the tC perfectly and we were excited to put them on. The installation instructions provided by Grillcraft were thorough and complete and even included step-by-step pictures of the process. The first step of the install was carefully removing the front bumper cover and then removing the stock black plastic grills. The instructions did specify some minor drilling was required, luckily we found out only 3 small holes needed to be drilled, one for each lower grill.

The upper grill was installed quickly and easily, the lower grills took about twice as long due to the fact there is 3 of them and the space to work is a bit tighter. After securing the grills with the supplied hardware, we put the front bumper cover back on and made sure no bolts were missing. All in all it took about 2 hours to install the grills with basic hand tools and a cordless drill. The finished product is exactly what we were looking for and was definitely a solid choice.

Ugly, stock, plastic grill

Another shot of the stock grill

New Grillcraft MX Series Hotness

Lookin' Good!

Adjustable Air Ride Lowering Kit Installation on a Bentley Flying Spur (By Bryan Ellis)

Adjustable Air Ride Lowering Kit Installation on a Bentley Flying Spur (By Bryan Ellis)

The guys at Adjustable Air Ride have developed a fully adjustable suspension linkage that replaces the stock arms in 95% of vehicles with “Airmatic” suspensions.

It’s a really simple and very ingenious kit that doesn’t even require a wrench because there's nothing to unbolt. Simply take off the original link arms and replace them with fully adjustable, billet aluminum version that tricks the factory computer into thinking the vehicle is sitting higher than the factory setting and therefore lowers it.

Since it is fully adjustable you can make your vehicle have whatever stance you like and you can return it back to stock just as easily.

The kit is not expensive and can be installed in 30-45 minutes on any Bentley, Mercedes Benz, Porsche, Audi and Volkswagen with an Airmatic suspension.

Call the guys at http://www.motorweb.com if you have questions or need a deal on the kit.

Jason wanted a little better sound and some extra power out of his 2006 BMW M5 so he started shopping for a new exhaust he’s had some experience with Corsa and decided on the lighter, more powerful Axel-Back exhaust system. (Corsa Part number 14556 from https://www.motorweb.com)

The Axel-Back system features a straight-through, non restrictive design that was tuned specifically for the BWM E60 M5. The Corsa exhaust uses Corsa’s patented Reflective Sound Cancellation technology for F1 race car inspired sound with increased power and flow.

When we took the exhaust system out of the box we could tell it was dripping with handcrafted quality. It was premium stainless steel construction and came with polished stainless steel 3.5” tips that gave it an awesome, elegant look once we got it installed.

The forums said this was a simple bolt on installation and they were spot on. This was one of the easiest exhaust installations we had done and it took no time at all. Just measure 2 ¾ back from the heat shield and cut the factory pipes on both sides, unbolt the two ground cables at the front hangers on each side and get a screwdriver and some soapy water to remove the front hanger. We just moved the hangers over to the new exhaust and reassembled using the clamps provided to connect the system where we made the cuts in the factory system.

We’ll report back after we’ve had a chance to do a test drive, but the factory claims an additional +8 peak horsepower and 7.5 ft-lbs of torque and with a lifetime warranty for as long as you own the car it was well worth the investment.

Even with a handful of vacation road trips under its belt the S80 is only pushing 64,000 miles. I figure with a little T.L.C. I can keep this little “Euro” going for a long, long time.

There are a couple things I promised I’d do to get it back in shape like a new coat of paint and some interior upholstery in the front seats, but number one on the agenda was the front struts and bearings. A couple months ago they started to rattle a little when we hit a pothole and now any crack in pavement brings an obnoxious rattle that makes even a short around the neighborhood bothersome.

We got the parts shipped from the folks at Motorweb.com (http://www.motorweb.com) and when everything came in we got Caliway started on the project.

He got is jacked and started the disassembly. It went very well and here is the video if you want a tutorial for your own late model Volvo S80. Enjoy!

Removed lines and tie rod and axel and sway bar end link

http://carcribs.com/2008/08/12/replacing-struts-and-strut-mount-bearings-on-a-2000-volvo-s80-29-liter-nonturbo.aspx
Once the axel and fasters were out of the way the strut just fell out.

Once out use a spring compressor to take the tension off enough to remove the bolt on the top to get it apart.

When it comes to aftermarket parts, however; they are few and far between. When we had a customer ask about changing out his stock silver headlights for a black or “smoked” version we found that nobody manufactures them for this vehicle. The only remaining option is to open and paint the stock headlights to get the requested look. This meant a custom job was in order!

Stock

Steve Gonzales and Caliway Jones knew the original lights would have to be opened up, separated, painted, and re-sealed. Most if not all automotive headlights are sealed with a thick gasket to prevent tampering, and most importantly moisture. The easiest way to open the lights is by heating and slowly opening them one side at a time. By using a steady 180 degree heat and some creative thinking they got the headlights apart and exposed the pieces necessary for painting.

Open & seperated

After being professionally painted gloss black it was time for re-assembly. New sealant was applied to both lights (as some was lost in removal) to keep them clean and moisture free. The same process is used to re-seal the lights as was used to open them. The lights were heated to soften the glue and slowly pressed back together, ensuring a tight factory fit.

The results were flawless and gave this vehicle the one-of-a kind look the owner was looking for.

New Sealant Applied

Lens with freshly painted black shroud attached

Lights re-assembled and ready to be installed.

Finished Product!!

Auburn Gear ECTED Locker on 2005 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited (by Bryan Ellis)

Auburn Gear ECTED Locker on 2005 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited (by Bryan Ellis)

I’m doing some research on front lockers for my jeep and I’m thinking of doing the Auburn Gear front locker. I had ARB front air lockers in the past and they worked well, but eventually developed an air leak that left the compressor running almost constantly when they were engaged.

Auburn gear makes and electric locker called the ECTED that is “selectable” for either limited slip functionality or Full Locking differential. ECTED is an acronym for Electronically Controlled Traction Enhancing Differential. (Pronounced “ek-ted”)

One of the things I like about the Auburn Gear ECTED is the fact that it can be off and on “on the fly” at any road speed. This functionality can be switched on and off via a module in the passenger compartment.
The ECTED is also very quiet and comes with a one year warranty from Auburn Gear. There is also a Differential Exchange Program (Auburn Gear calls it their D-REX program) that covers replacements for an additional four years.

One possible snag we ran into in their catalog is that the maximum tire size you can use with the Dana 30 axel and the ECTED is 31”. I found this odd and called the Mike at Auburn Gear. The best thing about Auburn Gear is that humans answer the phone. Mike told me he would talk to one of the engineers get me an answer and call me back right away. I’ll keep you posted on my progress and hope the tire limitation doesn’t send me looking for another front locker.

Update: Mike called me back right away and said that the tire recommendation was kind of an industry standard and they went with it because others in their industry used it. I'm going to go with the Auburn Gear locker and keep you posted on how it performs with the 33" wheels and tires. As soon as Caliway figures out my gears I'm going to order it. We'll be posting video of the Installation process for your enjoyment.

Thanks Mike at Auburn Gear for the great customer service!
K&N Drycharger installation on Jeep Wrangler Unlimited (By Bryan Ellis)

K&N Drycharger installation on Jeep Wrangler Unlimited (By Bryan Ellis)

Those unfamiliar with the desert Southwest may assume that we in the Phoenix area rarely get rain of any kind. Let me assure you, this is not the case. We get a summer rainy period called the Monsoon Season that can create severe weather like dust storms, high winds, severe downpours, flooding and occasionally a stray tornado. The Monsoon season usually starts about June or July and ends around mid-September.

When I had the stock air box on the Jeep TJ, I didn’t really worry about getting water in the intake because it was fairly well enclosed and there was only about a 3” hole in the very front where water could get in. With the AEM Brute Force Intake installed the intake appears to be a little more vulnerable to the effects of large volumes of fluids dancing around the engine compartment. (Or maybe I’m just paranoid.)

With Monsoon Season right around the corner I decided to do something to protect my intake from taking in water. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not going to be fording any streams or anything like unless I head up to the Black River again this summer. I do, however, have a tendency to intentionally hit any standing water and larger puddles at a high rate of speed. (Especially if there are innocent bystanders nearby.)

I have the partition installed in my engine compartment that came with the AEM Brute Force Intake, but just in case I thought I should install a splash guard on the filter itself. Water would have to be fairly deep in order to make it to the intake since I installed the 3” body lift and 33” tires, but as a precaution I thought a splash guard would be a nice addition since they are fairly inexpensive and easy to install.

K&N has what they called “Prechargers” that fit nicely over their aftermarket filters but I couldn’t find any specifics on water resistance so I kept on looking. The K&N “Drycharger” says it is treated with silicone so it repels water and looks like it would work over my AEM filter fairly well.

Injen has a product called “Hydro-Shield” and their website states they are treated with a “Hydrophobic Process”. (Which may be techie-speak for a silicone coating.) Either way they seem like basically what I need to repel any rouge splashing that may take place in my engine compartment.

These are easy to install and just slip over the aftermarket filter. It probably took me longer to write this article than it did to pop the hood on the jeep and install the Hydro-shield. You just slip it over the aftermarket filter and away you go. Of course you shouldn’t completely immerse your intake in water with one of these aftermarket splash guards, but it should repel the rouge splash from my puddle expeditions this summer during our rainy season.

If you would like to add one of these to your setup you can visit www.motorweb.com and search on Hydro-shield, then search for the best option to fit your specific application.

Once larger tires are installed, the vehicle will have less rpm due to the larger tire rotating at the same speed as the smaller tire resulting in the speedometer displaying the wrong mph. With installing the “Jet Accu-Speed” product, one can fix the rpm reading and set the computer and speedometer to show the correct speed when driving.

The “Jet Accu-Speed” can be installed quickly and easily by anyone with basic mechanical skills and can be purchased at http://www.motorweb.com. The “Jet Accu-Speed” replaces the need to change out your speedo gears and is less of a hassle to replace/maintain.

Filtermag traps wear inducing particles from 40 microns down to 1 micron.

I installed it as soon as I got it out of the box and putting it on was a snap. I just got it close to the oil filter and it snapped right into place. I have to say I didn’t really read the directions until later that day and found out that I should have installed the Filtermag on the Bottom side of the filter instead of the top side. I figured I would leave it there and check the results then install it correctly after my next oil change.

There are two types of Filtermag products. The SS series is made for light duty cars, trucks and motorcycles. The RA series is for high performance, large diesel, racing and heavy duty automotive applications. The SS series can be had at http://Motorweb.com for about $40 depending on your vehicle and the RA can be purchased for around $60-100.

As you can see from the video it did catch some shavings and I’m sure if installed correctly it would catch more. I’m putting it back on after this posting and we’ll check it again after my next oil change.

http://carcribs.com/2008/06/03/filtermag-testing-on-2005-jeep-wrangler-unlimited-by-bryan-ellis.aspx<A href="http://www.motorweb.com
<object/">

T-Rex Billet Grill Installation on 08 Chevy Equinox (By Ryan Vink)

T-Rex Billet Grill Installation on 08 Chevy Equinox (By Bryan Ellis)

Billet grilles are custom grille inserts that are usually used to cover or replace the factory grille of a particular vehicle. Billet grilles can be made from about anything from aluminum to stainless steel and even ABS plastic.

Billet grilles are usually cut into their custom shape from a solid piece of raw material (as opposed being cast from a mold.) This can make a billet grills significantly sturdier than their injection molded, forged or cast brethren.

Billet grills are very easy to install since the generally bolt right over the factory grille. They use hidden screws and brackets to securely fasten to the factory version. Of course you can also find versions that totally replace the factory grille and they are usually a little more difficult to install.

A new grille is a very stylish way to set your vehicle apart from the rest of the pack and it gives it a very nice personal touch. There are a number of grille manufacturer out there dedicated to delivering a quality product. They usually specialize in a specific niche market and cater to the needs of the customers in it.

In this edition we installed a T-Rex 2- piece Billet Grille to Vickie’s 2008 Chevy Equinox. As you can see it is a great looking product and very well made. The manufacturer’s part number is 21285 and it can be had at www.motorweb.com for $164.00 plus shipping which is a great deal for such a nice product.

It took no time at all to install and looks great. We give this product two thumbs up and highly recommend the T-Rex product to anyone looking for billet grilles and accessories.

Let’s face it; we always take too much with us when we go places. The roof rack allows you to take loads of gear wherever you go and it keep as much outside the vehicle as possible. (And usually leaves the occupants much happier and easier to deal with.)

There are several things you should consider when buying an external basket or roof rack for your vehicle since they are not all created equally. First of all you need to make sure you are getting an external system that attaches securely to your ride. The “feet” are the foundation of any rack or basket since they are the part that actually mounts to the exterior of the vehicle. Without a good foundation nothing else really matters.

Once the feet are connected, the crossbars provide load support between the feet. Once the basket is attached to the crossbars you are ready to start hauling your gear. It should also be said that you should have some kind of secure anchor points that will assist you in securing your cargo to keep it from moving around.

While doing the research on the appropriate roof rack for the Hummer H3 we found a great low-profile version from IAG-Corp in Scottsdale, Arizona. The rack has secure mounting hardware that attaches to the vehicle, stronger than needed crossbars to take on the heaviest of loads, and a huge basket that will stand up to the biggest loads.

You would have to be nuts not to get this one if you have an H3. The installation was easy, the price was right and the look is awesome. Call Craig at IAG-Corp if you need one and he’ll get you taken care of. His number is 800-762-4317 or you can visit their website at www.IAG-Corp.com.

More than enough to handle the heaviest load!

Here are the crossbars getting mounted on the top of the H3

Here is the roof basket going on the crossbars.

Here is Caliway screwing the rack down with the cargo tie downs.
